Which wall do you have
Before you interpret a crack in a foundation wall, establish what the wall is made of. Two materials dominate US basements and they behave differently enough that the same crack means different things in each.
Concrete block shows a regular grid: horizontal mortar beds every 8 inches and vertical head joints offset course to course. Tap it and it sounds hollow, because the units have open cores. Poured concrete is a continuous surface — no grid, occasional round form-tie marks or a horizontal seam where two pours met, and a solid sound. In a finished basement, look behind an access panel, at the rim above grade outside, or inside a utility closet.
That single fact reorganizes everything below. Poured concrete is monolithic, so a crack runs through the material wherever the tension happens to be highest. Block is an assembly, so a crack follows the mortar joints, which are weaker than the units — and that is the whole reason stair-step cracking exists in block and brick and never in a poured wall.

Cracks in a poured concrete wall
Poured walls crack mostly from curing shrinkage. Concrete gives up roughly 1/16 inch of length per 10 feet as it cures, and a long wall relieves that with one or more vertical lines, usually within the first few years of the pour. They often start at a stress riser — a window opening, a beam pocket, a plumbing penetration — because that is where the section is thinnest.
A vertical crack under 1/16 inch that stays dry and holds its width is ordinary shrinkage and belongs on a monitoring log rather than a repair invoice. Draw a pencil line across each end, write the date, measure the widest point, and photograph it with a coin in frame. Return after a full wet-and-dry season. That costs $0 and produces a stronger conclusion than any single inspection, because it captures movement rather than a moment.
Seal a poured-wall crack when water or soil gas is using it. Polyurethane injection runs $350 – $900 professionally and stays flexible; epoxy is the stiffer choice where an engineer wants the section bonded. A DIY kit at $60 – $150 does honest work on a reachable crack in dry conditions. Sealing here is moisture and radon control, and it is worth saying plainly because quotes frequently describe it as stabilization.
Cracks in a concrete block wall
Block walls crack along their joints, so the pattern to read is the shape of the path rather than the width of the line. A stair-step running diagonally through the mortar means one part of the wall has moved relative to another — either differential settlement below, or soil pressure from outside pushing the wall in. The stepping itself is just the material choosing the easiest route.
Block also resists lateral soil pressure less well than a poured wall. The units are hollow, the joints are unreinforced in a great many older homes, and the wall behaves as a stack rather than a slab. That is why bowing shows up disproportionately on block foundations, and why a horizontal crack running along a single mortar bed deserves immediate attention — the wall is hinging at that course.
Check for a bow before you price anything. Run a taut string or hold a long straightedge vertically from floor to ceiling against the wall and measure the largest gap at mid-height. Under 2 inches, carbon fiber straps are generally viable. At 2 inches or more, the wall needs mechanical restraint — anchors tied into soil beyond the failure plane, or steel beams tied to the floor structure. A narrow stair-step that measurement shows is dormant is a maintenance repair: grind the joints out and repoint, $500 – $2,000 for a typical run. Fixing the water outside is what keeps it dormant.
Why injection kits fail on block walls
Crack injection assumes a solid wall with one discrete void running through it. The port holds pressure, the resin travels the length of the crack, and it bonds both faces. Every one of those assumptions describes poured concrete.
A block wall is hollow cores and mortar joints. Injected material finds the cores and runs into them, so the pressure never builds, the crack never fills, and you have paid for a kit and possibly hidden the evidence. Any product sold as an injection fix for a stair-step crack is worth reading twice before buying.
Block repair works one of two ways instead. Where the crack is stable and the goal is water, the answer is surface treatment plus drainage correction: repointing, a cementitious parge or membrane on the interior, and fixing the gutters, downspout extensions and grade outside that put the water there. Where the joints are moving, the answer is structural reinforcement across the wall — straps, anchors or beams — sized from an engineer's findings rather than from the crack's appearance.

When to bring in an engineer
Get an independent structural engineer, at $450 – $600, when the crack is horizontal on either material, when a block wall shows stair-stepping that is widening, when a string line shows a bow of any size, or when the two faces of a crack sit at different depths.
The reason to prefer that over a free inspection is that the engineer's product is the assessment. They have nothing to install, so the finding reads the same whether your wall needs monitoring or $15,000 of anchors. The report also gives three contractors one identical scope to bid against, which is what makes quotes comparable — and on block walls in particular it settles the question of whether the joints are still moving before anyone sells you a system.
