What sump pump installation costs
A complete new installation — cutting the slab, setting a basin, wiring, and running the discharge line — costs $1,000 – $3,500. Dropping a new pump into an existing pit is a different job entirely: $400 – $1,200, usually done in an afternoon.
The line item worth arguing for is the battery backup at $900 – $2,500. Heavy storms take out power exactly when the pump is needed most, and a primary pump without backup is a device that fails at the moment it matters.

New installation or replacement?
Replacement ($400 – $1,200) applies when you already have a pit, a working check valve and an intact discharge line. It is straightforward, same-day work, and a competent homeowner can do the pump swap themselves for the cost of the unit ($150 – $600).
New installation ($1,000 – $3,500) means there is no pit yet. That is concrete cutting, excavating a basin below slab level, setting and gravel-packing the liner, plumbing the discharge, and a dedicated GFCI circuit. Where the discharge has to run a long way, or freeze protection is needed, expect the upper half of the range.
A sump pump on its own manages water that has already reached the basement. If water is arriving through walls or up through the slab, the pump is one component of a drainage system, not the whole answer.
Is a battery backup sump pump worth it?
If the basement is finished, or has flooded before, yes — and the reasoning is simple. The storms that overwhelm a sump are the same storms that knock out power. A primary pump with no backup has a single point of failure that correlates precisely with the conditions it exists to handle.
- Battery backup ($900 – $2,500) — runs 5–7 hours of continuous pumping, longer intermittently. Batteries need replacing every 3–5 years ($150 – $300).
- Water-powered backup ($1,000 – $2,000) — runs on municipal water pressure, so it never runs out of charge and needs no battery maintenance. It uses roughly 1–2 gallons of city water per gallon pumped, and it is unavailable on well systems.
Weigh either against what a flooded finished basement costs: commonly $3,000 – $10,000+ in remediation and replaced flooring.
Submersible or pedestal?
Submersible pumps ($150 – $500) sit in the water inside a sealed pit. They are quieter, handle debris better, allow a sealed lid — which matters for humidity and radon — and typically last longer. This is the right default for a finished or frequently-used basement.
Pedestal pumps ($100 – $300) keep the motor on a shaft above the pit. They cost less, are easier to service, and run loud. Reasonable in an unfinished utility basement where noise is irrelevant.
Horsepower follows the water volume, not the house size: 1/3 HP handles most homes; 1/2 HP suits high water tables or long vertical discharge runs. Oversizing causes short-cycling, which shortens pump life rather than extending protection.
How long they last, and what maintenance costs
Plan on 7–10 years. Replace proactively rather than during a storm — the whole point is that replacement is a $400 – $1,200 scheduled job and failure is a flooded basement.
Twice a year, five minutes:
- Pour a few gallons of water into the pit and confirm the pump starts, pumps and stops.
- Check that the discharge actually exits outside and runs away from the foundation.
- Clear debris from the pit and check the float has free travel.
- Test the backup system on its own, with the primary unplugged.
On permits: many municipalities treat a new pit and discharge line as plumbing work ($50 – $250), and many prohibit discharging into the sanitary sewer. A licensed installer handles both — if a bid omits the permit entirely, ask why.
