What drying out a wet basement costs
Wet basement repair runs from $100 to $26,000, and where you land inside that range has almost everything to do with where the water comes from and almost nothing to do with how wet the floor looks. Most homeowners land in one of three places: $100 – $600 for grading and gutter work, $1,300 – $2,800 for a dehumidifier when the problem turns out to be humidity, or $2,300 – $7,500 for an interior drainage system when water is genuinely coming through the wall.
The reason a single average would mislead you here is that these three are separate problems that produce the same damp smell and the same dark patch on the floor. A contractor arriving to quote a wet basement will price the system they install. The diagnosis that decides which of the three you have takes about two days of waiting and costs nothing.

Interior drain tile is priced per linear foot, so the length of your perimeter sets the total more than anything else. A 120-foot perimeter at $65 a foot is $7,800 of pipe and slab work before the pump; the same perimeter partially trenched along two walls is closer to $3,000. Ask any bid to state the linear footage it covers, and compare bids on that basis rather than on the headline total.
Two line items on that table are easy to underestimate. A dehumidifier at $1,300 – $2,800 looks expensive next to the portable unit at the hardware store, and the difference is real: a basement-grade unit is sized for the volume, plumbed to a condensate drain so nobody empties a bucket, and left running unattended. A portable at $250 that gets emptied for three weeks and then ignored is money spent on a problem that comes straight back. Flood cleanup at $3,000 – $10,000 is the other one — it is priced by what has to be thrown away rather than by the water itself, so the same six inches costs very differently in a bare storage basement and a finished family room with carpet and drywall.
Regional labor rates move all of these by roughly a quarter either way. Deep basements in the upper Midwest and Northeast cost more per linear foot to trench than shallower ones further south, and crews in those markets are busiest in the weeks right after a heavy storm cycle. The diagnosis that costs nothing
Tape a two-foot square of clear plastic sheeting tightly to a dry patch of basement wall, sealing all four edges with duct tape. Leave it 48 hours. Moisture on the room side of the plastic means humid air is condensing on a cold surface, and a $1,300 – $2,800 dehumidifier ends the problem. Moisture trapped behind the plastic means water is coming through the wall, and drainage work is the honest answer.
Then walk the outside during the next heavy rain. You are looking for downspouts discharging within a few feet of the wall, gutters overflowing at a corner, soil that slopes toward the house, a patio that has tipped back toward the foundation, or a window well filling like a bucket. Each of those sends hundreds of gallons at your foundation in an afternoon, and each is correctable for a fraction of a drainage system.
If the basement stays dry through a full wet season after those corrections, you are done. You saved several thousand dollars and the only cost was your own attention. Spend in this order
First, under $600. Downspout extensions to discharge 6 or more feet out, clean gutters, soil regraded to fall about 6 inches over the first 10 feet, window-well drains cleared. Give it one full rainy season before deciding anything else.
Second, under $3,000. Inject any single crack that leaks at $350 – $900. Add a dehumidifier at $1,300 – $2,800 if the plastic test pointed at condensation. Replace a sump pump that is past ten years at $1,000 – $3,500, and add battery backup at $900 – $2,500 if your worst flooding has coincided with power outages.
Third, five figures. An interior perimeter system at $2,300 – $7,500, or exterior excavation at $8,000 – $26,000 when the wall itself is deteriorating or a finished basement can tolerate no water at all. At this tier, buy an independent structural engineer's report at $450 – $600 first.
