Why hairline cracks are normal
Concrete shrinks as it cures. A poured wall loses roughly 1/16 inch of length per 10 feet during curing, and it goes on losing moisture for years afterward. That shrinkage puts the wall in tension, and concrete is weak in tension. It relieves the stress by cracking — somewhere, in thin vertical lines, usually starting at the weakest point in the pour.
That is not damage. It is the material doing what it does. Most poured foundations have several hairline cracks, and the majority of homeowners never notice them until they finish a basement or go looking after reading something alarming.
How thin is "hairline," exactly?
Under 1/16 inch — about the thickness of a credit card edge, or roughly the width of two sheets of paper. If you can slide a dime into it, it is no longer hairline; that is closer to 1/16 – 1/8 inch and belongs in the ordinary-crack conversation over on crack in foundation.
Measure it rather than eyeballing it. Cracks look dramatically wider in raking light and in photographs, which is how a 1/32 inch line becomes a late-night worry.
The exceptions worth attention
A hairline crack is benign because of its width and its behavior. These four patterns override the width:
- It runs horizontally. A thin horizontal crack across a basement wall still indicates lateral soil pressure. Width is not the diagnostic here; direction is.
- It leaks. Water passing through a hairline means it goes clean through the wall. Not structural, but worth sealing — and worth checking your grading and downspouts.
- It is growing. A hairline that reaches 1/8 inch over a few months is not a hairline crack; it is an active crack you caught early.
- There are suddenly many of them. A wall that develops a network of new cracks over one season is telling you about a change in load or soil conditions.
Also note: hairline cracks are radon entry paths. In a high-radon area, sealing them is part of mitigation even though they are structurally irrelevant.

For a dry, stable hairline in an unfinished basement, doing nothing is a legitimate and defensible choice. Mark it, date it, check it next season.
Seal it when the basement side ever shows moisture, when you are finishing the space, when you are selling and want the inspection report clean, or when you live somewhere radon matters. Hairline cracks in a new home
Extremely common, and usually appearing in the first 1–3 years as the concrete finishes curing and the house compresses the soil beneath it. Most builder warranties cover foundation cracks over a specified width — frequently 1/8 inch — for the structural warranty period, so it is worth reading yours and reporting cracks in writing before that window closes, even if you are not worried about them.
Photograph and date what you find. If it later widens, you have a documented history, which is worth far more in a warranty conversation than a recollection.
